Here is the story of where it began….
Since I’ve been bringing my lavender to local markets, I’ve heard many visitors remark on how well they sleep with the scent of lavender on their pillow. Alongside this type of interaction I find myself often sharing my knowledge of the different varieties of lavender that often leads them to learn (to their surprise) that lavender comes in several different colours of buds (not all lavender is purple).
Later, remembering I fell in love with a woolly sheep pattern, I came up with the idea to combine my production and love of lavender with the idea of a restful sleep alongside the old rhyme of counting sheep to fall asleep and my first Sleep Sheep was born. I named him Hidcote 1 and he lives on my bedside table.
However that wasn’t quite ‘enough’ (for this creative). I wanted to add an educational element to my idea and bring this forward to the public. This is when I decided to create a series of 10 Sheep each named after a specific variety of lavender and then I decided that each sheep’s sweater colour would be indicative of the colour of that variety. I chose my varieties and thus the sweater colours (pink, light purple, medium purple, dark purple).
As I made each sheep, I found that although similar, each seemed to take on unique characteristics ~ especially in the facial expressions…they were unique…they were one-of-a-kind! So I decided to hand-stamp each sheep’s name with an identifying serial number on a tag that I then attached to each sheep.
Next I made a cozy felt scarf and tied it around the neck and doused this with my lavender essential oil. I attached a descriptive tag including a ‘how to use’ and voila!
